Standing Firm in Power and Pride: Community Leadership

As part of our Black History month posts, we proudly honour Delores Vassell, Head of Supported Housing and Outreach, and the longest-serving member of staff at @Tuntum Housing Association, Her unwavering dedication has helped shape the movement for racial equity in housing and community empowerment in Nottingham through her work over 3 decades of supporting some of the most vulnerable within the community. . Delores joined Tuntum on 8th April 1991 and at the time she was the only housing officer alongside 3 other members of staff, with only 60 homes at the time. Delores reflects that working as a housing officer at that time in Nottingham was very different.

Yesterday in London Tuntum CEO Charmaine Simei joined a panel of housing leaders and experts to discuss how the housing system needs to evolve to meet the rising challenge of homelessness. As we embark up Black History Month with its key theme: Standing Firm in Power and Pride; Tuntum Housing reflects on the role of its founders, a group of community activists from Nottingham’s Black community who came together in 1988. Their mission was to address inequalities in housing provision and create economic opportunities, particularly for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities in Nottingham. Today the communities we serve are ethnically diverse, and we are proud to be a community anchor organisation that promotes inclusivity and community cohesion for all groups. Tuntum’s AGM and Board Tour

On Thursday, 25th September, we were delighted to welcome Clive Foster MBE, Windrush Commissioner as guest speaker at our AGM. Clive stated that the ‘Tuntum story is the Windrush story’ and acknowledged how the Association has played a significant role in supporting the community within Nottingham over the last 3 and a half decades. Barrington Billings, Chair of BME National

We are delighted to announce that on 10th September, at the BME National meeting, Barrington Billings, BA (Hons), FCIH was appointed as the new Chair of BME National. Barrington is currently the Director of Operations at Tuntum Housing Association, and is well known in the housing sector having been a past president of the Chartered Institute of Housing and a past chair of Manningham Housing Association. After confirmation of the appointment, he said ‘I am looking forward to the role for what is an increasingly challenging time for the housing sector and even more so for the BME sector’.

Launch of the Office of the Windrush Commissioner

On Wednesday 16 July, Hackney Council hosted the launch of the government’s newly appointed Office of the Windrush Commissioner, Reverend Clive Foster, MBE. His appointment signals the beginning of a nationwide listening tour, designed to restore trust with the Windrush generation and their descendants through meaningful discussion and reconciliation. The day brought together key dignitaries including Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney; Councillor Carole Williams, Hackney’s Cabinet Lead for Windrush; Minister Seema Malhotra; Deputy Mayor of London Debbie Weekes-Bernard; along with community and council leaders, to discuss the Commissioner’s role in preserving the Windrush generation’s legacy and pursuing justice for those affected by the scandal.
